Adult and Child Education at St John Bosco School
In Partnership with the City of Sunderland College
Families provide our first steps into the community and teach us about the most essential things in life. Family Learning provides a wide range of opportunities to participate and learn in fun, varied activities and courses that support parents and carers to help their children and to learn for themselves, particularly where they have not done anything since leaving school or had child care responsibilities.
Who are our courses for?
Courses are for parents, guardians, carers or grandparents who would like to take an active role in their child’s learning.
Our Courses
We offer English, Maths and ICT courses. They usually run for approximately 10 weeks. Our school works in partnership with Sunderland College to provide these courses and have been running very successfully for many years.
Parent and child sessions
This course requires at least two sessions per week. College Tutors work together with Parents, their children and a Teacher/Teaching Assistant from the school, to show Parents how their child learns and works in the school in one session and the second session is led by the College Tutor as below.
Parent only sessions
College Tutors work with the Parents to show them the new methods used in School to teach their Children. This session gives the Parent the opportunity to improve their own skills and the Parent will gain a qualification. This course generally only requires one session a week.
What about resources?
We provide all the required resources for the course. There is no cost to pupils or parents.
Benefits of the Course
Many of our parents and carers are motivated to join in to help their child but soon find that they too are getting huge benefits for themselves. Being part of a group, increased confidence and sense of well being and acquiring new skills and knowledge. Children derive great enjoyment from working with their parents, grandparents and other adults in a caring role and they too improve their confidence, self-esteem and social skills.
What our parents say
“During the course I have enjoyed spending time with my child. Together we have enjoyed counting; learning shapes, playing counting games and little trips out have been fun. I find numeracy very difficult to grasp but my tutor has helped me a great deal. The tutor didn’t give in helping me until I totally understood. The courses have helped me to find friends as I’m new in Sunderland, gain confidence with maths and spellings also I feel now I can help ALL my children with their homework.”
“I have developed good relationships with the other mothers through the sessions and we’ve all helped each other out. Looking forward to the exam and hoping I pass. Our tutor has been great. My son has really grown in confidence, within the small group they have worked in. He’s made special friendships with the children he’s worked with.”
“I think over the short period of time I have been on the course we have achieved so much. I can see a big change in not only my son’s learning and developing but the other children in the group. I do think the games and role play that we have done has helped the children learn without realising it.”
Life Long Learning
Many of our parents, grandparents and carers have gone on to take further courses, achieving qualifications in Literacy and Numeracy, improved employability skills and undertaken college courses or progression to University Access Courses.
Adult and Community Learning
Adult community education is an important first step back into second chance learning for many adults. In partnership with the City of Sunderland College, we are able to offer adult only courses in English, Maths and ICT.
