PE & Sports at St John Bosco
We offer a wide range of activities to our children aiming to provide learning opportunities which will encourage them to lead a full and active lifestyle.
We embed the 3 primary aims of Physical Education
To enable children to live a full life as a child and to realise his or her potential as a unique individual;
To enable children to develop as a social being through living and co-operating with others and so contribute to the good of society;
To prepare children for further education and lifelong learning.
How We Do This.....
We have a Year 5/6 boys and girls football team.
Training every Thursday - lunchtime 12.30-1.00pm – open to everyone!
We also have an annual penalty shoot out competition which every child in the school participates in.
Our Breakfast Club runs daily from 8.00-8.55am providing children with a nutritious breakfast of cereal, toast and juice followed by a fun fitness session with a specialist sports coach. Activities include multi-skills, movement and a range of games. We operate flexibly allowing parents the opportunity to bring their children as required depending on work commitments or other family needs.
At St. John Bosco School we feel that learning to swim is a vital life skill.
We use Sunderland Aquatic Centre and their swimming coaches to inspire our children to swim. Year 3 and Year 4 children have the opportunity to attend the Centre each year (rotated each year so that each year group attends for 3 terms).
Pupils from Year 1 through to Year 6 also take part in the Water Safety Roadshow each year. Lifeguard staff visit school to teach children about staying safe in the water.
Year 1 Walkwise Programme, run in conjunction with City of Sunderland, encourages children to increase their knowledge of road safety in a fun way.
Year 5 Bikeability Programme gives children the opportunity to bring their bikes to school for a week of training with City of Sunderland professionals which includes following traffic signs and getting ‘road ready’!
Children have the opportunity to experience a wide variety of activities including:
Ghyll scrambling Experience
High Challenge course
Derwent Hill is situated in Keswick in the Lake District and has been run as an Outdoor Education Centre by City of Sunderland Council since 1962. Year 6 children have the opportunity to attend a 5 day residential course every year.
Our Dance Club runs on Tuesdays 3.15-4.15pm
Key Stage 1 and 2 children enjoy movement, working with others to develop creativity and imagination.
Year 6 children have the opportunity to perform in the Sunderland Schools Dance Festival every year. This is an exciting and unique event held at the Empire Theatre, Sunderland
Outdoor and Adventure Activities
Our children experience a fun and active day at our annual Sports Day!
Children from Year 6 who are trained as Team Leaders, lead the Sports Day for Key Stage 1 which always proves to be a great success.
Primary School PE and Sport Funding
The government is providing additional funding of £150 million per annum for the academic years 2013-14 and 2014-15 to improve provision of Physical Education (PE) and Sport in Primary Schools. The school is in receipt of the first phase of funding - £8,000.
At St. John Bosco School, we will be allocating the funding as follows:
- Continued Professional Development for all staff
- Provision of new sports equipment
- Participation in Deanery inter-school competitions
- Attendance at clubs
- Evaluation and success of Sports Day led by Year 5/Year 6 Sports Leaders
Assessment in PE
At St. John Bosco School we feel it is vital to assess children in PE.
PE is assessed in a fun and rigorous way. Each child receives a passport to PE and after each 6 week teaching unit they receive an assessment card to complete together with their specialist PE teacher.
The teacher will look at each child’s progress in a specific area and aim to increase their awareness and interest in the benefits of physical activity.
We aim to engage, motivate and develop pupils who have a high level of understanding and skill in a range of physical activities.
